I am a British artist; I gain inspiration from what I see in the world around me.

Annie Fry

I have always been interested in colour but my focus on people developed whilst I was teaching, and I became interested by the work of Freud and Spencer, Hammershoi & Wyeth, among others. My studies in sculpture at college made me more aware of surface qualities then to the effects of light on surfaces. This has informed my working practices and I now create textured surfaces on which to paint whilst I focus on the effect of light on surfaces in my painting.

I am analytical in my approach and investigate the subtleties of colour and tone, painting in oils, with extensive colour mixing prior to and during the painting process.

A lot of my work is developed with a very conscious focus on tone as a result of my interest in the effect of light on a surface and this results in a bias towards realism. I work primarily in oils, usually on canvas but as I have a keen interest in surface qualities I also work in mixed media on board in order to explore and develop the potential of surface qualities in my work.

I am interested in sequences of work where I can explore the variations of a different view, a different emphasis. When forming a composition I like unusual angles and sometimes a form of abstraction is achieved. I like to use the frame of the canvas as a deliberate tool for cutting off the image or just containing the composition completely.

A thing of beauty

Thank you soooo much for Rosalind. She is a delight, a truly marvellous creation and she is now adorning the far wall of the sitting room, a thing of beauty and a joy forever... the more so because hanging beside her is your portrait of a young man entitled Adam though now, given where he is, he does excellent service as an Orlando to the nearby Rosalind. The two of them are, and will continue to be, wonderful companions. They radiate love and youth in a most lovely fashion. There can be nothing better in my collection. And I look forward to Cleopatra...!
